My Happiness Resolutions for 2012

A few of my friends have started Gretchen Rubin’s “Happiness Project.” Some of it involves making lists, or personal commandments. I am taking on monthly resolutions for the time being, by focussing on aspects of my life I would like to improve. I have come up with twelve goals, which equates to a goal for each month, and are all catered towards improving my personal wellbeing:

  1. Find a new job. This is a given really, but it is still my number one priority for the month, so it makes the list.
  2. Start a  daily fitness regime. My days of kickboxing are far behind me and I miss being as fit as I was back then. I am not going to add “losing weight” to the list, because I don’t particularly want to, I kind of like my extra baggage.
  3. Read the books on my shelf that I have not got around to. Then set myself a Goodreads challenge for the year.
  4. Make a decision to either do Trek America or my Masters by summer. I cannot do both (unless I come into some money). If I am honest I am leaning towards my Masters, which would be in Wildlife Documentary Production at Salford University. It is the only MA of its kind in the country and is recognised by the BBC. Animals have been one of my main passions in life since being a child and this would be my dream job, so I am seriously considering it.
  5. Travel to places in Europe. This is always less expensive if you just go for the weekend. I want more culture in my life this year.
  6. Try not to have my guard up so much when it comes to romantic relationships. A good friend of mine pulled me up on this a while ago. He believed I subconsciously seek out relationships that are doomed to fail, because I think they will inevitably fail anyway. Whether or not that is true, I am not sure. Maybe I value my independence too much? Maybe I still have lingering issues over trust? Either way, I should probably work on this.
  7. Start a new hobby, or work on an already existent one. I would like to continue with my photography this year, as well as try some other things, such as learning an instrument or a new language.
  8. Learn how to drive. This is something I have been putting off for a long time now and I really need to bite the bullet and do it. Having a driving license also makes you more employable.
  9. Eat healthier. This goes hand in hand with exercising; I want to be healthier in general.
  10. See friends that are not in my immediate vicinity more. I miss my Bangor peeps a ridiculous amount and want to see them on a regular basis this year, regardless of distance.
  11. Write more. Not in the blogging sense, but actually start doing more creative writing again.
  12. Be happy no matter what happens this year. Although we cannot help the things that happen around us, we can change our attitude towards it.
